Man Gave Bogus Name After Trying to Steal Gas, Police Say

A 34-year-old Racine man is accused of stealing gas from an area gas station on three separate occasions and using another man's name to identify himself.

Daniel J. Foxcraft was charged in Racine County Circuit Court Wednesday with three counts of theft and two counts of obstructing an officer. If convicted, he faces up to 45 months in prison and $50,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, on Oct 13, Foxcraft was at Kwik Trip when an employee spotted he was trying to drive off without paying, so the employee ran out and flagged down a Sturtevant police officer. Foxcraft had tried to pay with a credit card at the pump, but only $1.78 in gas had been charged to the card before trying to drive off.

Foxcraft identified himself as Brian Coey to the officer and was given a citation. The employee told police he noticed the car and Foxcraft looked similar to a suspect in a $50 gas drive off at the station July 30 and another $99 drive off on Aug. 7.

The day after the confrontation, officers learned through an informant that Foxcraft was identifying himself as Brian Coey. On Tuesday, the defendant was pulled over on LaSalle Street in Racine where he was taken into custody.

He remains in Racine County Jail on $400 bond while awaiting trial.
