Drug Theft From South Shore Fire Department Under Investigation
Answering a bogus call gave an unknown suspect the opportunity to slip into a South Shore fire station over the weekend to steal an unknown quantity of controlled substances.
The South Shore Fire Department station at Highways K and H was burglarized in the early morning hours of Sat., March 19 after a bogus call about a fire came in to the station. Authorities are not releasing the quantity or details about what drugs were taken, but it is known that at least one rescue squad was broken into and amounts of one or more controlled substances was taken.
Mount Pleasant Police Captain Brian Smith confirmed that fire fighters received a cell call of a fire in a nearby subdivision. As the trucks pulled out of the bays, a figure was seen slipping inside before the door fully closed. Units from South Shore and Caledonia responded to the fake call.
"We can confirm that someone got inside the station and stole some medications that our rescue personnel use to treat patients," Smith said. "The matter is under investigation and we do have leads. Obviously, we're looking at the lapse in security."
