Child Porn Babysitter Plea Nets Him 80 Years

Alex Richter will spend 80 years - the rest of his life, really - in prison after he entered a no-contest plea Monday to four of 49 child sex assault charges against him.

Child porn defendant Alex Richter most likely will spend the rest of his life in prison whether a Racine County judge agrees to uphold his plea agreement or not simply because of the sheer number of charges against him.

Richter Monday entered a no-contest plea for four of the 49 felony counts he's charged with, and prosecutors are asking Racine County Circuit Court Judge Timothy Boyle to agree to sentence Richter to 80 years in jail, according to a story in The Journal Times.

"No contest" means Richter doesn't admit to any of the charges against him but typically means he is willing to accept jail time. The four counts are: repeated sexual assault of a child, sexual exploitation of a child and two counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child.

Richter faced 49 counts of child sexual assault for molesting six children - all of whom have been identified. Police say they found videos in Richter's apartment showing him having sex with children he was babysitting, including photos and videos of Richter performing sex acts with the children and of the kids performing sex acts on each other.

Richter was formally charged in November and could have spent over 1,800 years in prison and on extended supervision if convicted off all charges. He plead not guilty on Nov. 22 to all the counts against him.

His trial was scheduled to begin in January.

The state is also asking for 35 years of extended supervision and agreeing to drop the remaining charges, including those from a prison fight earlier this year

Boyle does have the discretion to sentence Richter more than the 80 years for which prosecutors are asking. Richter's sentencing is Dec. 12.
