Volunteers Clear Brush for Make a Difference Day in Sturtevant

The Kirkorian Nature Preserve was the place to be the morning of Oct. 22, 2011 for the annual Make a Difference Day volunteer movement.

Led by Trustee Linda Busha and Master Gardener Rose Woodruff, a team of hearty volunteers (including yours truly) cut down invasive species and laid mulch at the Nature Preserve in Sturtevant.

Located behind Schulte School near the Majestic Hills subdivision, Kirkorian is a wild patch in the middle of suburbia. The goal is to keep invasive species of plants, shrubs and trees from overtaking the native plants, flowers and grasses so the area can thrive and provide a nice retreat for residents. There is a mulched path that leads from the sidewalk along Broadway Drive into the preserve that needs filling every few months, too.

It was a great few hours spent working together to keep improving a wonderful space for area residents. I hope to see more of you out here next spring when we get together to do it again for Earth Day!
