Racine Lutheran High School Honors Volunteers

Racine Lutheran High School recently held an Appreciation Dinner to recognize volunteers who support the school through its Thrift Shops and Ladies' Guild.

Racine Lutheran High School recently held an Appreciation Dinner to recognize volunteers who support the school through its Thrift Shops and Ladies’ Guild. Dinner was served by the faculty and staff, along with a big dollop of thanks for years of faithful service.

There are two Racine Lutheran Thrift Shops, located at 1455 Douglas Avenue and 1222 Lathrop Avenue. The first shop opened in 1964 to support the school and lower tuition costs for families. The founders realized the store also provided a beneficial service to the community and opened the second site. The shops offer reasonably priced merchandise, including clothing for children and adults plus kitchen items and home décor. Volunteers include church and community supporters, parents, and students, who sort and tag items and also serve customers. Over time, the Thrift Shops have raised more than $3.2 million for the school. Also, the Ladies’ Guild sponsors a Harvest Fair, which is an annual fall festival and luncheon enjoyed by the entire community.

Funds raised by these volunteer groups are used for student financial aid and scholarships, plus operational expenses. The groups have also raised seed money for renovation of the school’s kitchen and cafeteria, a project scheduled to begin in 2014.

Racine Lutheran Principal David Burgess says, “We appreciate the many volunteers who, year after year, give of their time and resources to support this school. These efforts have helped generations of Racine families obtain excellent Christian education, with the lowest tuition and best private-school value in the community.

“Through the Thrift Shops, we are also reaching out to families in Racine who need a bit of financial assistance. This provides a walking, talking example to students of how we can serve God and help our neighbors.”
