Volunteer Recgonition Luncheon

Twelve individuals will be honored for their volunteerism at a ceremony and luncheon at the Racine Marriott on Friday, April 20, 2012.  A reception and silent auction will be held from 11:30 a.m. – 12 noon. 

The welcome luncheon is from noon – 12:45 P.M. and concludes with awards program by 1:30 p.m.  Tickets are available at the Volunteer Center of Racine County, 886-9612.

The twelve were chosen based on volunteer accomplishments; impact on an individual group or community; and leadership from nominations submitted by area individuals and nonprofit organizations.

Jack Ludwig – Agriculture Award

Jack is a Master Gardener whose impact on the Ridgewood Care Center radiates to the intricate, colorful gardens as well as the recently renovated dining room.  Jack’s leadership motivates fellow volunteers to share their unique gifts and talents.

Mary Koors – Arts & Culture Award

Mary shares both her love of art and humanity with the young men at the Racine Youthful Offenders’ Correctional Facility.  Mary is often one of the first adults in her students’ lives to offer an equal measure of art appreciation and compassionate consideration.

Ray Stibeck – Economic Development Award

Ray has helped to enhance the attractiveness of Racine County as a place to live and work.  He and Dan Johnson were the originators of the first annual community Thanksgiving Dinner at Festival Hall in 2010.  That event inspired the Christmas Basket project benefiting over 300 Racine County residents.

Marybeth Zuhlke – Education Award

Marybeth is a retired teacher who views volunteerism as a second vocation.  Her leadership and expertise are the key factors behind the success of the Racine Interfaith Coalition, Kids First, Root River Council and the Olympia Brown Unitarian Universalist Church.

Martin Meissner – Environment Award

Martin’s carpentry skills are evident throughout the grounds of the Eco-Justice Center.  His innumerable contributions have enabled the Center to concentrate its economic resources on its educational programming priorities.

Art Henschel – Good Neighbor Award

Art is known colloquially as the “Mayor of Sandy Lane.” Throughout his thirty year tenure as a Case High School teacher and into retirement, Art has kept the Village of Mt. Pleasant apprised of needed improvements or attentiveness.  He is as generous with his time as he is sharing his garden’s bounty.

Mary Fralich – Health Services Award

Mary’s training as a nurse has led to fifty years of volunteering in the healthcare community, most significantly with community blood pressure clinics.  Over the years, her medical training has prompted her to immediately refer clients to their health care providers.

Barb Hanke – Heroic Award

Barb is a registered nurse and an integral member of the Southeast Wisconsin Medical Reserve Corps.  As a Medical Unit Leader during a recent Racine Ironman event, Barb provided stabilizing care and comfort for a participant experiencing severe dehydration until the arrival of paramedics.

Nick Yackley – Human Services Award

Nick is a volunteer representative to the S. C. Johnson Retiree Board that plans and conducts activities for past employees of Johnson Wax.  He and his wife, Linda, are Meal on Wheels drivers.  Nick serves on the Racine Civic Centre Commission, the advisory board for Festival Hall, Festival Park and Memorial Hall.

Marjorie Tyle – Senior Award

Marjorie is a seventeen year volunteer veteran with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, currently working twice a week at the Cardio-Vascular Institute.  Marjorie is also a member of the Serra Club of Racine, and is the Financial Secretary and Membership Chair of the Catholic Women’s Club.

Ronald Tichy – Veteran Award

Ron is a Marine veteran who has places a high priority on service to fellow veterans.  He currently volunteers twice a week at the Wisconsin Veterans Home where has been a bus driver and  Acting Chaplain.  He is a member of the Bixby-Hansen American Legion Post #171 in Union Grove.

Adrian Machalik – Youth Award

Adrian is a key member of Explorer Post 500, a scouting experience that specializes in emergency services.  Adrian is an enthusiastic, productive volunteer with the Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare and the Volunteer Center of Racine County who, on his own initiative, seeks out community betterment projects.
