Community Corner

First Annual Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week Drive

The Continuum of Care for the City and County of Racine is partnering with community members, local churches, Walmart, and the Piggly Wiggly on Erie Street to collect food and personal items to support homeless students in our community—and we need your help.  Night in and night out, these children don’t know where they are going to sleep, and find themselves bouncing around between cars, shelters, motels, and relatives' couches because they have nowhere else to go. Without the school meals they rely on, they may go hungry during the Thanksgiving holiday.  We believe that while the fortunate among us celebrate bountifully this time of year, no child should have to suffer without food or shelter.  Your donations of food and personal items will go directly to serve these homeless children this holiday season.

You can help by dropping off your donations during the week at one of our participating locations.  Items will be collected at the Piggly Wiggly on Erie Street, Walmart, Racine Kenosha Community Action, the Hospitality Center, and at HALO.  A number of local congregations are also participating.  Please visit http://hhweekracine.tumblr.com/ for more information, including a list of kid-friendly items we’re looking for, and hours at each location.  The drive will run until November 23rd, and is being organized in conjunction with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.

The Continuum of Care for the City and County of Racine is a group of agencies that provide services to prevent homelessness, and provide emergency shelter, transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, and supportive services to homeless households.  The Continuum formed in 1996 as a collaborative, community-based effort to coordinate services, share information, increase funding, and eliminate duplication and gaps in services for homeless individuals and families in Racine County.
