Police: Man Stole Gas to Fill Up Stolen Car

Mount Pleasant police say a man who first stole a car from Madison also tried this weekend to steal the gas to fill it up.

Donovan Williams, 40, of Mount Pleasant, was charged in Racine County Circuit Court Monday with a misdemeanor count of theft. If convicted, he faces up to nine months in jail and/or up to $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, MPPD was called at 7:30 p.m. Saturday to the Kwik Trip station at 7155 Durand Avenue for a report of a gas theft. When officers arrived, witnesses told them that a man driving a blue Mazda pulled up to the pump and swiped a credit card that was declined.

The man - later identified as Williams - then pressed the button to pay inside and proceeded to pump almost seven gallons of gas that totaled $25.02. Instead of coming inside, though, Williams drove away.

Mount Pleasant police Sgt. Paul Maccari said a Sturtevant officer made a random stop at the gas station and was on his way inside just after the theft occurred.

"The Sturtevant officer had observed that vehicle as he was coming into the area, not knowing it was involved in the theft of gas, operated by an unknown black male driver," he said.Β

The employee behind the counter gave the officer the license plate number, and dispatch came back that the Illinois plate was listed toΒ a stolen vehicle report out of Madison, WI. Williams was named in the report as well.

MPPD located Williams' address and found the stolen vehicle there. Maccari said Williams was taken into custody without incident and placed on a probation hold at the Racine County Jail for violating a condition of his parole with the state Department of Corrections.

At his initial appearance Monday, Williams was assigned a $200 signature bond. His next court date is Aug. 15.
