Don't Be a 'Stupid Head;' Because Your Views are Stupid and So Are You

A little blurb about civility.

All too often a news story will come out and it is followed by a flood of comments or blogs seemingly written by children. Usually something along the lines of “You’re a stupid head."

Somebody will take a stand on an issue based on their religious beliefs and they are called bigots or ignorant. Then somebody will write how people who hold similar beliefs need to be more tolerant of other people and their views. Unfortunately, they defeat their own argument by doing so.

Telling people how clueless they are because they don’t believe or think the way you say they should is not being very tolerant. The knee-jerk reaction to go straight to name calling is something both sides of the political aisle are guilty of doing. Names like fascist, dictator, racist, and bigot come from the left; socialist, communist, anarchist from the right. Of course these are the nicer terms sent out by both sides.

I am not trying to sound too much like Rodney King, but ”Can’t we all just get along?”

Often people hide behind some avatar and feel that gives them the right to spew all forms of the vilest vitriol. One just needs to look at the comments from a recent article about Gov. Walker discussing his religious beliefs. Comments from both sides go way beyond crossing the line. So whether you are commenting on an article or writing a blog, whether you use your own name or hide behind a mythological avatar, think before you type.

Let’s keep it civil and remember: just because I don’t think exactly like you doesn’t mean I’m evil. I know I will be trying harder to bite my tongue and just agree to disagree.

Mr. Wright - How long have you been following the Patch? While I agree with you fully, I unfortunately feel that your words will meet with deaf ears, or keyboards. I sincerely hope I'm wrong. In all honesty, I think we're a little better than other internet news sites such as the HuffPo. Have you ever checked out the comments over there - scary! Not to mention the censorship that goes on over there. And the Daily Kos, well, that site is just a straight up joke - it's a 24 hour conservative bashing festival over there! Regardless, there's still room for improvement from us Patch knuckleheads, and Hoffa will support your call for civility on the Patch boards. Cheers!

James, I've been following Patch since the start. I agee that Heather A. does a great job of being balanced in her coverage. It is to the commentors and bloggers both on and off the Patch that I was directing my comments. I just hope we haven't gone past the point of no return.

@JRH & Chris - Thanks! I agree about the comments and wonder if the tone of the comments will change (toward more civility) once we're past the recalls and the Nov. election. What do you think?
James R Hoffa April 06, 2012 at 06:11 PM
@Heather A - I think it will depend upon the outcome and reactions we see to each election.
Chris Wright April 06, 2012 at 06:13 PM
I hope so.
