Village To Force Bank's Hand On Repairing Former Kohl's Building

The bank that owns the old Kohl's grocery store located at 3915 Durand Ave. may soon face increased pressure from the Village of Elmwood Park to clean up the property or tear it down, according to a story by the Journal Times.

The village board wants the village attorney to look at how the village can start working on the problems, which includes asking the Racine County Sheriff's Department to start issuing citations to NorStates Bank in Waukegan, Ill, the bank that owns the property.

Village trustee Nick Haas told the board that, despite repeated requests to fix the structural problems with the building, "the bank has failed to follow through on numerous promises to address issues at the storefront," according to the story.

Walmart was looking to purchase the old Kohl's property as well as a three-acre parcel to the south for a 40,000 square foot Neighborhood Market grocery store. To build according to their plan, village trustees would have had to amend the village's 2035 comprehensive land use plan to rezone the residential lot for commercial use. In August, the big box retailer withdrew their application.
