Review: Mount Pleasant’s New Pick N Save the Class of Local Groceries

What's your take on the new Pick N Save? Post your opinions in the comments or send an email to: dustin.block@patch.com

The new Pick N Save in Mount Pleasant is an upgrade over the store down the street it replaced. It’s also an improvement over every grocery store in the Racine area.

I was most impressed with the new produce section, which has a marketplace feel. Expanded offerings of deli and prepared foods line two walls, and a large section of tables and chairs are available for people who want to eat at the store. The produce itself is spread out nicely through the section, which had an earthtone-feel that’s a step up over the bright white colors of most grocery stores.

One notable change from the old Pick N Save is the liquor and soda sections are flipped. Now when you leave produce you’re greeted by a large selection of booze, followed by the soda aisle. I’ve seen other, newer stores take this approach. Maybe they want people to buy drinks while there’s still room in the cart?

My one complaint about Pick N Save is the relatively small selection of organic and healthy foods. If you know where to look you can find a lot of items, but I miss the organic and health foods section they had at the old store a few years ago.

Aside from the layout (and not being Whole Foods), it’s a really nice shopping experience. Being new, the entire place is clean and modern. The pharmacy and floral sections are improved over the old store, and the parking lot has the convenience of sidewalks leading out to cars. While I didn’t checkout the bathrooms, I’m told from a reliable source that they’re surprisingly nice.

While grocery shopping is something of a habituated outing (I bet you could walk blindly through your favorite store and find what you need), the new Pick N Save is a welcome break in routine. While more health food options would be appreciated, the store as a whole is a step above Mount Pleasant’s old Pick N Save – and every other grocery store in the area.
