You are going to a holiday party and need to bring the host or hostess a gift. Wine is a good option, but which one should you choose?
Two Racine area businesses are here to help.
“Wine continues to be the rage this Holiday season and Grapes 2 Glass in Sturtevant has a gift plan for the newbie on the wine block and the seasoned pro,” said Bob Mitchell, of Grapes to Glass in Sturtevant.
G2G can make a gift basket completely customized to your needs. And they do so using local products whenever possible. For example, a nice merlot might go wonderfully with some KP Toffee, which is made right here in Sturtevant. Or Pete's Amish Chocolate Crunch, Fudge from Twin Lakes and Indulgence Chocolates from Waukesha could be a delicious addition to a cabernet.
Bob Mitchell and Michele Bachman of G2G know their grapes and have provided this great guide to holiday gift wines:
A Prosecco, from the producer Caposaldo in Italy ($14.99), a robust Chilean Shiraz from Torres ($13.99) and an Italian Valpolicella "Ripasso" ($18.99) are highlights of the 2011 selections.
For the true wine connoisseur on your list, the newly released 2008 Grand Clapeau Red Bordeaux ($18.99) from the Haut-Medoc region is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlo. It has the elegance that only the most impressive wine region in the world can provide.
Surprise a close friend with a crazy-good bottle of 2009 Cristom Pinot Noir ($28.99) from Oregon's Willamette Valley (Cristom, Christmas...it all makes sense). The summer of 2009 was as hot as any in the last 20-years in the Northwest and the wines from that vintage show the heat in their big and muscular style.
If you are unsure of the receiver’s vino palette, you can go the safe route and grab a bottle of Castello del Poggio Moscato ($13.99), a slightly effervescent and mildly sweet, peach and pear hinted quaff. This wine is not from the Asti, but instead a nearby area, Provincia di Pavia, where an equally delicious wine can be made for a much lower price tag. Moscato has no enemies and can be enjoyed by all.
Now, for the wine lover whom you truly love, the "12 Wines of Christmas" is back again this year and this gift box features a dozen very different wines along with a sturdy and well-written sheet of tasting notes that describes each wine and offers food-pairing suggestions with each bottle. All for $135 a box.
If you are still unsure, you can bring your wine drinking friends with you to a free wine sampling every Saturday 3-5pm. Or go all out and make your holiday gift a wine tasting they'll never forget! Call Grapes to Glass to schedule your very own private tasting. G2G will provide the wines and Mr. Mitchell will take you on a tasting tour of wines throughout the world...and still have you home for Christmas.
Holiday Hours are Sundays 11-4, Mondays through Fridays 10-7 and Saturdays 11-7.
Uncorkt is also a great choice for your holiday wine purchases. Sherry Etes, owner, has some great recommendations for this holiday season.
“Wine is a perfect gift, whether it be a gift for a wine lover OR a hostess gift. At Uncorkt we know each and every wine in the store very well, so we will personally work with customers to find the perfect wine within any budget and to the specific tastes of the receiver,” Sherry said.
Sherry also suggests their various Holiday wine.
“Many are from Wisconsin Wineries, so money that's spent stays within our regional community,” she said.
Uncorkt currently has eight holiday wines available, but get them soon as possible because they are selling out quickly. They are typically more fruit forward and easy drinking, and great for entertaining. Prices range from $7 -$12 per bottle.
Uncorkt will be open daily from 10 am to 8 pm the week of Christmas, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Closed Christmas Day.
The Tasting Bar is open during store hours, stop in for a glass of wine and relax or finish your Christmas shopping!
Whether from Grapes 2 Glass or Uncorkt, wine can make the perfect gift. Visit one of these local shops today for the vino of your choice.
