Speaker Needed for Memorial Day Service at West Lawn Memorial Cemetery

This year's service is focused on youth and the future.

West Lawn Memorial Cemetery needs a speaker to talk about what Memorial Day means to them. This year, the service will focus on the future, and the speakers will be area students.

One of the scheduled speakers had to cancel so Barbara Mayfield, director of sales and marketing at the park, is looking for another area student who would be willing to talk about what Memorial Day means to them.

"They only have to speak for five or six minutes as part of the service," she said.

The park's annual Memorial Day Service will be from 10 to 11 am on Mon., May 30, in the Garden of Valor.

"We wanted to do something new this year," said Mayfield. "We thought having students give the speeches this year, especially given the political climate in the state, would be a better note for the service."

Cheyenne Lentz, valedictorian of the class of 2011 at Walden High School, will speak about, "Does My Generation Have a Role in America's Future." She was the winner of a scholarship through the Sturtevant VFW and placed sixth in the state competition for an audio essay about the same topic.

Reverend John Fleming of Evangelical United Methodist will do the convocation, and Cheryl McCrary and Kip Cushing will be the featured soloists. Mike Langendorf will play "Taps."

If anyone is interested in talking about why Memorial Day is important to them, please call Barbara Mayfield at West Lawn Memorial (262) 886-2400.
