The Racine Family YMCA invites all area families to visit today from 1 to 4 pm for the free annual Healthy Kids Day event.
Parents and kids will have a chance to play some family games, splash around during pool games, and tumble around during gymnastics. Kids can also get a taste of summer day camp and everyone can partitipate in the mini-health fair.
According to a statement from the Racine Family YMCA, childhood obesity continues to threaten the future of American kids so introducing physical activity into family life is more important than ever.
“At the Racine Family YMCA, we know that parents struggle to find the time to incorporate more active play and healthier habits into their kids’ daily routine,” says Lynda Knudtson, Community Health & Wellness Director. “Doing so doesn’t have to require extra money or resources. It’s as simple as making a play date with your kids, with two key requirements – be active and have fun!”
Here are five ways the YMCA suggests families get active:
Games Night: Introduce games that get kids moving like Red Light, Green Light or Simon Says. Not only does the whole family play, but kids get a turn at being the boss.
Dance: Turn on some music and have a contest or, if families have a gaming system like Wii or XBox Kinect, kids can challenge Mom and Dad and use the game to keep score.
Two Wheeling: Now that the weather is improving (or should be), it's time to dust off those rusting riding skills or pull out the rollerblades.
Chalk It Up: Play a good game of hopscotch or draw out four squares for a good time of old-fashioned fun.
Play ball: Playing soccer, basketball or baseball is as easy as grabbing some gear and heading to the park.
