Quonset Huts Keep History Alive in Sturtevant

Quonset homes were originally designed as convenient do-it-all storage buildings for the military in WWII. Turns out they make good houses for Sturtevant residents.

Originally built as military buildings during WWII, quonset huts came to Sturtevant as the war was ending to serve as employee housing for area manufacturers.

Located primarily on the 2800 block of 97th Street, the homes were built between 1945 to 1950. In addition to the houses on 97th Street, there are also a couple in the 9700 block of Corliss Avenue.

The buildings originally measured just 16' wide by 32' long and only a handful of them remain. Sturtevant's commemorative history book published in 2007 to mark the village's centennial does not indicate how many were put up or by whom.
