Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
When I was just a youngster I went to the store with my father one weekend. Standing outside, was - what looked like and older soldier, holding a bouquet of red flowers in one hand and a canister in the other. Without a word said, my father put 25 cents into the canister, (what I thought was a lot of money at that time), and the Soldier smiled, handed him a flower and said Thank you very much. On the way home I asked Dad what that was all about. I’d like to pass that information along again so you may tell your sons or daughters and keep this program from being forgotten. It was a warm day in…
Public safety is important for society. It’s as basic of a service a government can provide its residents. Yet, the demands society places on law enforcement professionals for more sophisticated training grows. Successful public safety begins with the training law enforcement and correctional officers receive as they enter their career, and continues to build in quality through the professional development they receive throughout their career. The number of trained professionals who protect us is amazing. Gateway plays a role in this through its law enforcement academy and its law enforcement…
I attended the vigil last night at 7 p.m. that was held in front of the home where 2 girls' lives were cut short, 9-year-old Dayja Scott and 8-year-old Dalijah Scott. 2 little boys were hurt; 7-year-old Michael Scott and 5-year-old Luther Scott remain hospitalized. I saw a community come together, people young and old, people from all walks of life to show they care and to show sympathy after such a tragic loss. I saw tears coming from children’s eyes who played with the victims, friends and neighbors hugged each other, strangers that never met the family bow their heads. I went as a mother …
I would like to express my gratitude to the citizens of the 63rd Assembly District for re-electing me to the Wisconsin State Assembly. I am honored and humbled that you put your trust in me to serve as your representative for two more years.  I will deliver on my promise to stand up for taxpayers and continue to reform state government.  I will work hard to eliminate burdensome regulations that stand in the way of small business growth.  I will work to bring more private sector jobs to Racine County.  Also, I will look for ways to continue to reform our schools to ensure every child gets a …
Congressman Paul Ryan is proudly pro-life. Congressman Ryan doesn’t separate his public life from his private life, which includes his Catholic faith.  He also said that pro-life position is based not only on his Faith but on science, which shows that the unborn fetus is indeed a human being. In the Vice-Presidential debate, Ryan explained, “My faith informs me on how to take care of the vulnerable and how to make sure people have a chance in life.”  While Ryan has said that he respects those who disagree with his pro-life position, under a Romney-Ryan administration pro-life policies would …
I questioned staying in the race last night, and mentioned that I was considering dropping out. My wife and I talked about this a lot last night and this morning. We had to really look at our priorities. The village is going through a rather rough time right now. I am confident that I could work with everyone to mend the areas that need mending and work on moving forward. However; the timing is not working out for me personally. My wife and I are concerned that I won't have the time to dedicate to the office of president that the position will require. There are a lot of issues outside of the…
There is no opposition to the development of the Kohl's property itself. The main issue here is the rezoning of an additional 3+ acres of residential property to commercial. Why push a rezoning when numerous other commercial sites are available?  Two prominent areas that come to mind are the vacant Sam's Club off S. Greenbay Road and the old Aldi's complex at 21st and Lathrop Avenue. These good options have space, zoning, infrastructure and no direct competition.    With no guarantees of commitment from Walmart, they won't own the property, they could break the lease and leave an even larger …
On behalf of the Village of Sturtevant and the Sturtevant Fireworks Festival Committee, we would like to thank all those that volunteered and the many sponsors of our annual Sturtevant Fireworks Festival on July 3.  We once again had a very safe and successful event thanks to the work of many volunteers. The activities, games, music, food and fireworks display were enjoyed by thousands. Thank you also to all those that attended the activities held at Fireman’s Park and helped make this family friendly event successful.  Hope to see you all again in 2013! Linda BushaTrustee, Village of …
In late March, Real Racine (the Racine County Convention & Visitors Bureau) was approached by one of the organizers of The Color Run, Jeff Suffolk, regarding the opportunity to host the race in Racine. The Color Run is a non-competitive, non-timed 5-kilometer run/walk where participants wear all-white apparel and are doused with a colored paint (food-grade colored cornstarch) at each kilometer mark of the race. The race is concluded with a finish line festival.Suffolk is a friend and former colleague of Ironman 70.3 Racine triathlon race director Ryan Richards.Richards recommended Racine to …
Dear Residents of the Racine Unified School District: I will be in California from March 12 through April 2 training with my new guide dog. This absence is unavoidable because my participation is a requirement for receiving my new guide. Since I will not be able to campaign in person for school board during that time I wanted to share a few thoughts with you in writing. Over the last six years on the school board I have witnessed the district’s employees and residents embrace the North Star vision of graduating all students ready for college or a career. The future of our community depends on…
Dear Community Supporters, We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone in our community for supporting us during this past growing season. Our produce turned out very well despite the cold wet spring followed by some hot and dry weather. Without your help we would not have been voted "Best Sweet Corn," "Best Fresh Produce" and "Best Roadside Stand" in this years Journal Times "Best of Racine." We hope to see everyone again next year. THANK YOU! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,Matt's Produce7120 Braun, Mount Pleasant
Children in this community are waiting for adults to take an active role in their lives.  They need support and role models to develop into productive citizens. You can provide this by giving just one hour a week of your time to become a mentor or tutor. Mentors and tutors support our youth by tutoring youth in subjects in which they are having difficulty, talking to them, teaching them to play games, encouraging them to work hard to succeed, teaching them a job skill, listening to them read, etc. A number of agencies in our community work to connect community members with students who need …
It's ironic because I was the only one in the office staff (because I was elected) who ever stood up to the intimidation going on in the office. After 18 years as a Mount Pleasant employee, I was surprised they so ardently fought the unemployment with their attorney when you look at other "settlements" they have made in the past with former employees. The village still refuses to acknowledge my "appointed" employment from 1993 to 2001. They refuse to acknowledge I was not terminated for cause. You have to really understand the entire situation and how it evolved. I never would have sought …
At the Aug. 22 Village Board meeting, there was a discussion about hiring a new administrator and whether or not the position would transition into a part-time job with a revised job description. I think we need to answer 3 questions: Should the position be full time? Should department heads bypass the administrator directly to the Board as suggested at the last board meeting? What is the job description? To the first question, I believe the position is a full time one.  As with all positions of any employment, the individual will dictate just how well the results turn out. Making decisions …
If you had the opportunity to attend the Sturtevant Third of July Fireworks Festival then you were not only entertained by some of the best local musicians in the area but also saw "the Biggest Little Village's Fireworks" show in the area.  And none of it would have been possible without the support of the residents and local businesses who provided for the funding of the event. I would like to thank our community business partners who were so generous in their financial support our efforts this year: Educator's Credit Union, Ruud Lighting, SC Johnson, Bombardier Recreational Products, …
The Milwaukee parental choice program was established in 1989 as Act 336, just before I was elected to the State Assembly. Some of you may be aware that this legislation was shepherded through the Legislature by former State Representative Annette “Polly” Williams of Milwaukee. Under this program, state funds are used to pay for the cost of children from low-income families in the City of Milwaukee to attend, at no charge, private “voucher” schools located in the City. Pupils began attending voucher schools under the program in 1990-91, as I began my first term in the State Assembly.  In 1990…
State Representatives Cory Mason and Robert Turner held a listening session at Gateway Technical College in Racine, WI last evening, April 11, about the State Budget. I presented a message with the vision a bigger perspective was needed when considering a budget. Here is that message:My name is Rees Roberts, a lifelong resident of Wisconsin. Here is the bigger picture as I see it.  Our current deep-seated,  growth entrenched economy is fundamentally based on fossil fuel energy. However, elected officials appear to be unaware that fossil fuel energy production has peaked. It’s called Peak Oil…
