Should Nickelback Perform at the Packers-Lions Thanskgiving Game?

More than 45,000 people have signed a petition calling for the Canadian rock band to be replaced from the nationally televised halftime show.

Nickelback? Step back!

Detroit Lions fans are rallying against the Canadian rockers after they were announced as the halftime band for the Thanksgiving game versus our own Green Bay Packers.

Dennis Guttman, a student at the University of Michigan, has started a petition to ask the Lions to drop Nickelback from the rock band’s scheduled appearance at the Nov. 24 game.

The petition rails against the group, asking "Does anyone even like Nickelback?"

One commenter, Eva Blankinship, said she would "rather drink bleach than listen to Nickelback and have them associated with Detroit."

As of Tuesday, Nov. 8, more than 45,000 people have signed Guttman’s online petition, and the pushback against Nickelback has drawn attention from national media outlets such as ESPNTime and Deadspin.

Some Detroit-area rockers have even “volunteered” to step in for Nickelback.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., a rock duo, announced on its Facebook page that the group “would be willing to replace Nickelback on the Thanksgiving Day Halftime show, but we still feel the Robocop Statue is a more important enterprise that we'd rather lend our support to.”

What do you think?

Should Nickelback perform at the Packers-Lions’ Thanksgiving Day game? And if not, which band should replace them?

Maybe the NFL went with Nickelback because Canadians don't celebrate Thanksgiving?

Perhaps Nickelback could dress up as Robocops?

Nickelback is a good band for a football game: very modern rock. Who would Detroit rather have play? Justin Bieber? Gag me, let the bands with talent just play. It's half time; if they don't want to watch, they can meander to the concession stand.

I guess I'm not sure why there's such venom. However, if Milwaukee was struggling as much as Detroit is economically, I'd guess there might be opposition to having a band from outside of the country performing v. let's say the BoDeans...

Word. Doing halftime shows means your career is on the downhill.

Isn't halftime of the Thanksgiving game typically the perfect number of minutes to run to the bathroom, refill beverages, replenish snacks and/or get another piece of pumpkin pie? Who actually watches that half-time show?

Honestly, couldn't they come up with anyone better than Nickelback???

Mr. Detroit Rock City himself, Kid Rock, would be way more appropriate for the Detroit Lions!

I can't believe people have energy and time to complain about something so stupid. I have never seen a half time show with bands I like...who cares!! To start a petition about THIS?? Come on. I remember when Elton John was revealed as Harley's surprise guest a few years back for their concert thingy. People were so disappointed and verbally vicious about it. It was irritating. Get over it people...I do not like Nickelback's music - but they are just as good as any other crap during half time. Go find a real cause already...

@HRG -

I don't know. I think that whole Elton John debacle had some pretty serious repercussions on the city of Milwaukee and the state of Wisconsin as a whole. I think we’re all still recovering from that disaster!

I especially loved how people were holding banners on overpasses apologizing for Elton – classic!

Any rational person would realize that asking Nickelback to perform at a Detroit Lion's game would be like asking Lisa Gerrard and 'Dead Can Dance' to perform at a Mike Tyson boxing match!

Seriously?? Don't people have lives? Nickelback is an amazing live band and Detroit should be honored to have a class act like them play! I've seen them in concert 9 times and no one would be disappointed with the performance. It's halftime who really cares what band plays your there to see the football game not for halftime! Like someone else said go to the bathroom, get a beer and all will be good. If your at home change the channel. And what does them being from Canada have to do with anything? They are a great country and our neighbors, what's the big deal. How will Nickelback performing associate them with Detroit? Doesn't make sense to me! I think this college student Dennis needs to concentrate on his studies instead of worrying about something so unimportant!

The NFL and the broadcast partners decide on half-time entertainment not for just the Detroit fans but rather the entire viewing public. I'd be happy to see Nickleback perform at half-time but being a realistic FOOTBALL fan, we don't sit around for the half-time entertainment. Bathroom, beverages and food are atop my list for the approximately 18 minutes that half-time encompasses.
45,000 people signed the petition, upwards of 2 million will watch this game in N. America alone. More because GB will still be undefeated. It's time to focus on your studies and find a way out of Detroit.

Missing the point packer fans. Detroit is home to more American musical roots than almost any other city in the country, from Motown to Techno to garage band. The point here is with that much musical variety to emerge from one city, why not choose local, nationally known, talent . Outside of Milwaukee, nobody has even heard of the Bodeans. And who's the kid selling glasses for Wisconsin Vision? Music is as big as cars and sports in Detroit. Get Detroit music, not what the network says thy should get. And read up a little Detroit bashers. The D is already coming back.

Agreed. MKE and DET both have remarkable musical tapestry, but we both like our rock straight-up. I shook my head and laughed at the Elton John fiasco, thinking "Geez, wasn't Bob Seeger, Rare Earth, Grand Funk, Alice Cooper or the 'Nuge available?" All DET rockers. Or Springsteen, who sounded like one.

Detroit finally has some success on the field after what 16 years or so now they think they can dictate who plays at halftime? Nickelback is better than the trainwreck of a half time show the NFL made us sit through at the Super Bowl last season... anything is better than that fiasco.
