For the first time in decades, the Rotary Club's Post Prom celebration is moving from downtown Racine.
When students don their finery on May 19, 2012 they will climb aboard their fire engines and thunder up their muscle cars on their way to the Sturtevant Sportsplex in the Renaissance Business Park.
Patch readers have weighed in with most adults siding with the move and students giving it a ... less than enthusiastic reception.
Karen Itzenhuiser posted, "It's going to be perfect. More people will be able to see the parade. I'm looking forward to it."
But Rina, senior Racine Unified student said, "It's really disappointing news to find out that 60 years of tradition are being flushed down the toilet. I wanted the dream prom night down town, just like my mom & grandma had before me."
Take our poll and tell us in the comments about your favorite prom memory!

I loved having post prom in Festival Hall. It's a tradition, it's meant to stay that way. There's a reason Racine's post prom is called "The World's Best Prom." It's not just because of how Racine does their prom, but because of where they host it. The venue is on the lakefront, it offers a large dancing facility and the outdoor aspect is a big crowd pleaser too. I understand there is a safety aspect behind their want to move, but no matter where you put it there is a potential security risk.

The sun rising over the lake after a long night, symbolizing the long years of school and the new stage of life ahead, versus laser tag in a rec plex. Hmmmm, not sure I get the need for this change ... no matter what is proclaimed, it smells like saving money was the catalyst.

But the kids are the ones insisting on having LaserTag as an option. So blaming to Rotarians for moving the location to respond to the stated desires of the kids is a bit asinine. The kids wanted a bigger venue, so the Rotarians have tried to accommodate them. It's the kids own fault for trying to turn this tradition into something it was never intended to be, so now they are complaining about the consequences. Keep it up and maybe the whole thing will be killed off completely.

As a high school senior, many of the students I have talked to had no clue about them changing it until it was announced. Many are unhappy with this and upset "The Worlds Best Prom" is being changed up. I think the Rotary Club should have actually talked to more seniors to get their views on this before changing up a tradition that has been on going for more than 60 years.
