Gov. Walker: Taking Time to Honor our Veterans
Scott Walker delivers weekly radio address.
Every Thursday, Gov. Scott Walker delivers a weekly radio address. This Thursday's address was titled Honoring Our Veterans.
The state has partnered with the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association to produce and distribute brief radio address once a week. Audio files and a written transcript of this radio address can be accessed on http://www.wi-broadcasters.org and http://walker.wi.gov/section.asp?linkid=1761&locid=177. Here is the transcript from this Thursday’s radio address:
Growing up in the small town of Delavan, one of my fondest childhood memories was of spending time with Clar Condon, who lived down the street from us. Mr Condon was a World War I veteran.
He used to love to show my brother and me all of the memorabilia he had from the first World War. It was like living down the block from a museum.
But Mr Condon did more than just tell stories; he was the conductor in our church band, he was active in helping shut-ins around the community and he organized all of us Boy Scouts to put flags on the graves of fallen soldiers.
Like so many of our veterans today, Mr Condon served his country and then came home to serve his community. It is for both of these reasons that my brother and I looked up to him.
Another unsung hero I think about is my Uncle Ken who served in Korea. It was only after he passed away that our family learned that he received a Purple Heart.
Throughout this week I’ve heard from other Wisconsinites about the veterans they remember. One woman mentioned her dad who’s still living and who served at the Battle of the Bulge. Another woman mentioned her husband who served in Vietnam as a medic. A man mentioned his friend who was wounded in Iraq saving other wounded soldiers after an IED attack in 2007. These are just a few of the thousands who have served our nation.
This week our state and nation honors veterans like Mr Condon and thousands like him. Our country is great because of the men and women who wear our country’s uniform and willingly put service before self.
This Friday, we honor all of the men and woman who served in our Armed Forces. On behalf of a grateful state, we say thank you.

If Scott Walker was so concerned about veterans, he wouldn't have bought into the Koch Bros.' whack-a-doo anti-government John Birch Society nonsense. Their most recently funded attacks on the U.S. Postal Service and ongoing lack of cooperation on passing jobs legislation (through their funded right-wing politicians in Congress) directly impacts vets (as well as the rest of us). I reject their un-American agenda, and in Wisconsin, Scott Walker is their poster boy.
In Mississippi, the whacky attempt to outlaw birth control failed. In North Carolina, the nutty attempt to re-segregate the Wake public school district failed. In Ohio, the draconian stripping of public workers rights failed. Let's send a message to the Koch Bros. and their TEA-GOP: get out of Wisconsin, your nutty agenda isn't wanted here!
Oh, and water fluoridization didn't turn out to be a Communist plot to poison American children after all, did it? Thank you Charles and David for reminding us just how out on the fringe your dad Fred and the John Birch Society are from the mainstream!

The factual flaws (e.g. MI "attempt to outlaw birth control", et al) are so rampant in this post that one wonders from what source, if any, the writer is getting "information".
The vitriolic and hateful tone of the writing further indicates a lack of civility we have come to expect from those who refuse to acknowledge the benefits of the budget repair law and other positive measures proposed and passed by this remarkably effective administration and legislature.

I apologize for the error...."MI" should have been "MS".

@Bren -
Seriously, you have to stop attending mass at The People's Temple and relying upon the Daily Kos as your sole source of news information – it’s really having an effect on you!

Might have been nice if this had been posted...oh...say...yesterday, on the actual holiday, particularly since he mentions the day specifically.

Mr. McBride: Gov. Walker had no choice on the date. The WBA gives him one opportunity per week, he pre-records and traffics it, and the stations decide when and whether they run the recorded message.

I realize that Dick. My comment was directed at the folks at Patch here.

I was just going to write to the editor and say that. It is vitally important that "where and when" for veterans day events are posted ahead of time. It is rude to our veterans and people who think the veterans being honored is important. I personally, did knot see "where" Muskego was celebrating veterans and I "did" look on patch on Thursday and Friday. I think we got either mixed up or side-tracked this year 2011. If you need any help posting for veterans day events, I could help out, also.

Please remember, us vets volunteered to serve. Some of us want to serve our country and believe in the mission. We knew our lives would be disrupted.

How old are you, Mike? There are still vets around who were drafted and who may or may not have supported the conflicts for which they were conscripted. They all deserve our respect and gratitude.

If you would post this announcement before the broadcast, listing the time and station, people could listen live. Even after the fact, the time and station would be helpful for those who would listen weekly.

Ditto Mr. Barnum's request. And thanks, Gov. Walker for your tribute to those who serve. We all hope that your "Wisconsin: Open for business" efforts will lead to more employment opportunities for our returning vets.

Our country is great because of the men and women who wear our country’s uniform and willingly put service before self. I totally agree and personally thank all that do. Where did Walker miss the bus ? Walkers agenda has always been to put himself before anyone else including our Vets.

@Bucky -
If cutting your own compensation package and selflessly giving back close to $.5M in salary and benefits when he was Milwaukee County Exec. is putting "himself before anyone else including our Vets," then I’d hate to see what you think of the truly selfish people like those who created a pro-labor boycott list that contains Wisconsin union labor produced Georgia-Pacific products! Those people must be the real scum of the earth, right?

I'd like to keep the politics out of my comments to thank ALL of our soldiers, past and present, for giving of their time and lives so selflessly. Kind of like this article was meant to do in the first place.

Grandstanding again just before the re call . Sorry Scott your a little to late. Save the deer ? Nicks law ? Where are all the jobs ? Your just a failure to the people you serve. Why don't you just step down and resign and save the state the time and money for the re call and take Fitz and Clayfish with you. I think that even the Republician Party would like to see you go.
