Private Land Open for Public Hunting

This year, hunters have the opportunity to enjoy access to nearly 29,000 new acres of private land open to the public within close proximity of the state’s metropolitan areas.

A new Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources video captures the success of the Voluntary Public Access program in opening up large tracts of prime habitat land, often connected to public land, for multiple outdoor recreational activities.

Nice buck spotted along the bike path in Shorewood yesterday. Stood there for 15 minutes while several people passed and took pictures. They are in the rut right now so they behave a little strangely.

******************

Yes they do. Strangely enough that you probably don't want to stand there too long staring at them taking pictures. They've been known to charge walkers, bicyclists and even cars.

Does anyone else find it weird we are glorifying the murder of an animal?

Since they're used for food, no. Do you consider motoring through the drive-thru and ordering up a chunk of murdered and butchered cow using the euphemism "Butterburger Single" weird?

Have you ever read about the rituals for how to kill "Kosher"?

How to kill a Cow - Kosher style:

The killing of an animal to turn into meat is a celebration.

BTW - If you're a vegetarian - well, even Plants are living when harvested and cells die.

AND - Obama uses terror drones daily, to murder diverse people and destroy property World-Wyde, courtesy your tax dollars. I do believe that the alleged death of Bin-Laden by Seals, courtesy of Obama was widely celebrated and glorified.

Bob, i do find fast food weird once we step outside the norm and examine it.

Richard, I am actually a vegan. Ill start with your comment about plants.

Plants do not have complex feelings and emotions. They do not bond in families or feel pain when cut or sad when their babies are taken away.

And i am fully against the celebration of anyone's death and very very much against the US drone program under the Bush and Obama administration.

Okay, well I guess once one steps "outside the norm", everything still back in "the norm" looks weird. So I'm not sure what your point is, but - whatever.

The human species has been eating meat and hunting and celebrating successful hunts pretty much forever. Most people eat meat. Most commercially available meat is harvested under more inhumane methods than those involved in hunting. There's nothing weird or out-of-the ordinary about hunting, whether you choose to participate, or not. I don't hunt, and yet I don't find anything about it weird. It's quite commonplace, actually. It's not something peculiar to this country, this point in time, Western Civilization, etc. Similarly, there's nothing weird at all about fast food. It's very commonplace as well. Believe it or not, you can actually get a salad at the drive thru.

I know a few vegans. I don't find their choice of diet as weird as I do their insistence on making an issue of it.

"Plants do not have complex feelings and emotions."

Yeah, you better hope that you never find yourself in a situation like this:

I will dedicate my harvest to Matt today. As soon as that deer comes near my stand its emotions and feelings will disappear.

Why do nut job liberals always want the rest of us to share in their misery?

"Does anyone else find it weird we are glorifying the murder of an animal?"

Yes, and no. I've had to accept the fact that my cats will still catch and kill rodents even though I feed them well. It's a good skill for them to maintain in case they should ever find themselves on their own. I think it's the same for people. We should be able to feed ourselves without going to a market.

That said, I don't hunt. I have a herd of deer in my back acreage, and I get more enjoyment from watching them go about their lives than I would from eating them. I had some venison for the first time at Thanksgiving -- it was like a cross between beef and lamb. Not bad, but not worth all the hoop-tee-doo.

" As far as Matt being a vegan, that's a side dish to pork, chicken, turkey, beef, fish or anything else that has legs or swims, but not a healthy choice without meat."

It's a healthy choice as long as you carefully combine plant proteins and find a source of Vitamin B-12 to supplement. Most people haven't the knowledge to do it. You can't just live on rice and lettuce and stay healthy.

I don't hunt deer, and thus have no pics or stories.

However, here's my meager contribution to the blog:

Boffa -

The dinner was held last month at the Lincoln Restaurant in the District, not far from the White House.

Attendees/winners were:

Janet Jones, retired grandmother/homemaker from Accokeek, Maryland
Paula Matyas, a retired GM autoworker from Milford, Michigan
Jim Heath, a firefighter from Aurora, Ohio
Wyndi Austin, a realtor from Gilbert, Arizona

(Anyone who contributed $3 or more was automatically entered in the contest.)

The dinner lasted for just a little over an hour; President Obama lasts for over 4-more years…

Once we repeal that silly XXII Amendment... who knows?

There were 6-different dinners "with" during the course of this great campaign that blew (Willard, Lyin’ Ryan and Thompson) back to their caves; these dinners were designed to be small and intimate opportunities for strong and faithful Obama supporters, not international Versailles type affairs.

We leave those types of ostentatious and wasteful dinners to Willard and the TAP…

MAN is the only ANIMAL on the planet that kills for SPORT; the only exceptions are those animals that MAN has trained to kill for their SPORT. If you want to shoot a virtually defenseless animal with a .308 caliber round, that’s fine, just do not call it a SPORT. Your existence is not dependent upon killing a deer and getting a little venison… if it is, you have far more pressing problems that need to be addressed.

Going into a forest with only a 2” pocket knife to hunt a grizzly or black bear… that’s both HUNTING and SPORT. Although I would suspect the over-testosterone, driven people who HUNT for deer would probably not be up to that real SPORT…

Just call it what it is; an indulgence of a primal urge to KILL SOMETHING, largely, because you CAN…

Man is not the only animal that kills for sport. Look it up, in the animal kingdom it's called "surplus killing". Also Chimapanzee's kill little resus(sp?) monkeys for sport and don't even eat them...

We consume the deer harvested for calories. If these deer were not harvested calories would still be needed causing farm animals to be killed. Harvesting a deer is extremely cheaper than going to the grocery store for the same calories.

Sport + Food = Win

Make is a great day

Contaminated meat is great for all conservatives, especially venison... Craig thinks humans are inoculated against that.

John believes the human population is over populated.
He should do his part to cull the herd, and harvest himself.

Jaime Lannister –

Thank you.

I am aware of the phenomenon of “surplus killing” across the larger animal kingdom. All of the literatures pertaining to these acts delineate a CONTEXT where abnormal climatological circumstances, environmental factors are present. These are aberrations, not firmly enshrined behavioral patterns in groups of animals. You do not attempt to disprove/negate a thesis by citing anomalies… furthermore, in a vastly more meaningful sense, all of this behavior has a “survival of the species” component associated with it. [Rhesus monkeys included]

Many, if not all, carnivores possess behavior patterns which allow utilization of a kill later, or allow other members of the same social unit or offspring to use the food.

My 11 lb dog killed a few birds this past summer. He did not consume them. He also chases squirrels and rabbits in an attempt to murder.

This dog breed is a lap dog, not a sport dog.

Make it a great day

I think we all should be thankful for the sportsmen, without their actions the deer population would be over populated and then become sick. Starvation from over population is common, as are CWD among other diseases. Personally I prefer to see the deer harvested and consumed rather than die a painful death and go to waste.
Auto insurance rates would also increase due to the mismanaged herd.

Human population is not the same as animal population. Humans are innculated and have programs to feed even the poor. Whitetail Deer do not have immunizations, nor do they have the ability to grow and produce their own food.
Wisconsin's deer herd is being managed very well, with the aid of sportsmen. Not only does it raise revenue, the culling of the herd is not costing you the taxpayer any money.
